KAW Community Outreach Programs

Kerala Association of Washington has been actively involved in community outreach programs towards the betterment of the community we live in and also in supporting charity initiatives in our homeland, Kerala.

KAW traditionally has been offering financial aid to our members in need and also for our less fortunate countrymen back in India, especially in Kerala. The funds usually come from voluntary donations from KAW members and also through matching donations from Microsoft, Boeing, Cingular, Washington Mutual and other similar organizations who offer 100% matching on donations to non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organizations. 100% of your donation to KAW Charity Fund goes directly to Charity w/o any administrative expenses. Contact us if you would like to help our less fortunate brothers & sisters.

Charity Updates

March 14, 2010: Anwin finds a matching donor
In Nov-Dec months KAW did a fund raising event to help out a three year old from Trichur requiring Bone Marrow Transplant. Finally he got a match, 6 out of 6, from his uncle, which everybody thinks is a miracle including his doctor. This has been a huge financial relief for the family as well. Now the whole expense comes down to around Rs 15 lakhs.
February 28: Bone Marrow Registration Drive for Anwin
If you haven’t registered to be a marrow donor please register with NMDP. Finding matching marrow for South Asians is really challenging as the registry got only very few members. You can register either through blood sample or through a swab of cheek cells. Collecting cheek cell is as easy as rubbing a swab against the inner side of your cheek few times and it takes less than a minute! The facts & myths about being a marrow donor can clear many of your fears to become a donor.

KAW has worked with NMDP Seattle Chapter and is arranging a Marrow Registry Drive (cheek swab method) on February 28th Sunday at 1 PM to 4 PM at Hindu Temple & Cultural Center, Bothell.

Anwin & Abel Fund Raising Update:
EC 2009 would like to thank your generous support in the fund raiser for Anwin & Abel. We raised a total of $7,000 with the matching grants from Microsoft. We will be using these funds for the Bone Marrow Transplant of Anwin, once he gets the match.

Abel successfully underwent Stem Cell Transplant during the third week of January from his twin sister. He is still monitored at Vellore hospital for any post transplant reactions/complications.

Anwin has very low cell count, that makes him very susceptible to various infections. While Abel was undergoing SCT, Anwin got kidney infection and admitted to Vellore Hospital ICU for couple of weeks in critical condition. He has survived the situation and has been discharged from the hospital now.

In the month of November 2009 Anwin had got 4 potential matches from German marrow registry, and everybody was hoping one of them to match in the high resolution matching process. But unfortunately all of them turned negative. The family is in desperate search for a matching marrow donor.
